Revegetate the shores and edges of lakes, rivers, streams and ditches using indigenous species favouring soil stabilisation.
The presence of a woody shoreline of a depth of ten to fifteen meters, between the water body and the residential zone, allows water runoff to penetrate into the soil, where it will be naturally filtered and purified. The soil acts as a filtering sponge and retains sediments and nutrients. This allows, among others, to prevent silting, sedimentation and algae, aquatic plant and cyanobacteria proliferation.
To give a hand to Mother Nature while planning your land’s development, it is possible to plant various species of indigenous shrubs. It is recommended to choose species that are adapted to the different soil conditions (sun, shade, humidity, spring flood, etc.) and which present the following characteristics:
- fast growing;
- hardiness to all tests;
- a well developed root system.
Species presented in the following table are particularly useful for the revegetation of shorelines, because they are perfectly adapted to this environment: they remain in the size of a shrub, they are rarely the beaver’s target and they grow easily and rapidly.
